Este é mais um episódio do Entrelinhas.

Eu sou o Vitor Hugo Batista, e a obra de hoje é Morte e Vida Severina,

dele, ele mesmo: João Cabral de Melo Neto.

Bom, para o vídeo de hoje eu bati um papo com Otto Wink. Ele é professor universitário de Literatura

e pesquisador. Então, bora para mais um vídeo?

Morte e Vida Severina foi publicado quase no meio do século 20. O mundo tinha saído

recentemente da Segunda Guerra Mundial. Na memória, ainda havia a lembrança

da explosão das bombas de Hiroshima e Nagasaki e a sensação de que a vida é passageira.

Aqui pelo Brasil, o Estado Novo havia chegado ao fim com a queda de Getúlio Vargas em 1945.

Mas em 1951, com a ausência de novos líderes, Getúlio volta ao poder através das eleições diretas.

Esse segundo momento de Getúlio na presidência, que durou cerca de três anos e meio, foi marcado

por muita corrupção e descrédito, e terminou com seu suicídio em 1954.

Com sua morte, o Brasil teve três sucessores que ocuparam a cadeira da Presidência da República

até 1956, quando Juscelino Kubitschek foi eleito, e toda aquela famosa política dos

"cinquenta anos em cinco" aconteceu. Depois disso, Jânio Quadros foi eleito, exerceu o cargo

por 206 dias e renunciou. Quem assumiu foi João Goulart, o Jango, numa época extremamente

marcada pelo conservadorismo, e que culminou no golpe de 1964 e no início da ditadura militar.

A obra de hoje está inserida no contexto do Modernismo Brasileiro, como o Sagarana,

que a gente já falou antes. Morte e Vida Severina surge na geração 45, composta por escritoras

famosas, como Clarice Lispector e Lygia Fagundes Telles. É aqui também que temos poetas como

Lêdo Ivo, Domingos Carvalho da Silva, Péricles Eugênio da Silva e Jair Campos.

Nomes pouco lembrados, mas que compõem essa variedade de vozes uma geração que nega

a herança Modernista das primeiras gerações e volta a utilizar uma poesia com metro com formas

fixas e um tom grandiloquente metafísico. Todas aquelas questões sobre o predomínio do

existencialismo, da reflexão sobre o mundo e tudo mais. A poesia volta a lidar com temas

tradicionalmente poéticos - a noite, a lua, as aflições humanas, a solidão, a angústia, a busca de

respostas sobre o mundo - e foge um pouco dos temas sociais.

"O amor comeu minhas roupas, meus lenços, minhas camisas

O amor comeu metros e metros de gravatas, o amor comeu a medida de meus ternos, o número de

meus sapatos, o tamanho de meus chapéus

O amor comeu minha altura, meu peso, a cor de meus olhos e de meus cabelos"

Quando a gente pensa a poesia brasileira do século 20,

João Cabral de Melo Neto é considerado por muitos estudiosos literários

um dos mais influentes desse período, principalmente porque traz uma perspectiva

mais objetiva da poesia, uma novidade até então.

Ele nasceu no dia nove de janeiro de 1920, em Recife,

numa família da elite nordestina e, no caso dele, pernambucana.

Ele teve acesso ao melhor da educação ocidental, mesmo que vivesse num território periférico

como o Brasil e o Recife eram um considerados naquela época.

Na fazenda dos pais, ele estava em de trabalhadores

e pessoas que transmitiam a poesia oral e popular do Nordeste,

como o cordel, os cantadores, os repentistas,

e vão ser uma porta de entrada no universo literário que João Cabral futuramente vai ocupar.

Na adolescência, ele começou a se interessar por literatura mesmo, de fato,

mas ele não queria ser poeta, não, ele queria ser crítico literário

para descascar alguns autores e obras por aí...

Mas nessa época ele tinha seus 17 anos e não tinha tanta bagagem e conhecimento para isso.

Foi aí que ele decidiu escrever poemas para acumular experiências

e depois se tornar o crítico literário que ele tanto queria ser.

O resultado da história a gente já sabe, né?!

Ele não se tornou um crítico literário coisa nenhuma.

Mas isso é uma característica definidora da sua poesia,

ele escreveu com bastante densidade reflexiva e metapoética.

Aos 22 anos, ele se muda para o Rio de Janeiro com a família

e publica seu primeiro livro de poemas, "Pedra do Sono".

Muitos dizem que ele é um poeta sem sentimentos, que matou o eu lírico

e escreve de forma dura e concreta, tanto é que ganhou o titulo de

poeta engenheiro e arquiteto das palavras.

Ele chegou a dizer em uma entrevista que seus poemas eram trabalhados arduamente,

uma poesia cerebral. Essa particularidade dele causou uma ruptura na literatura brasileira

e inspirou muitos escritores ali na segunda metade do século passado.

Em 1945, ele começa a trabalhar como servidor público e, nesse mesmo ano,

ele se inscreve em um concurso do Ministério das Relações Exteriores

e passa a ser um dos integrantes do quadro de diplomatas brasileiros, ó que chique.

Ele atuou em vários países ao longo de 42 anos, como Espanha e Portugal,

durante todo esse período como Diplomata.

E durante todo esse período como diplomata, João não deixou de escrever, não.

Pelo contrário, a maioria das suas obras foram escritas

enquanto ele ia de um país e de uma cultura para outra.

É possível da gente observar e perceber alguns desses cenários nas suas obras.

Outra característica curiosa da vida de João Cabral é que ele tinha muita dor de cabeça.

Pois é, ele era o verdadeiro garoto enxaqueca

e chegou até a dedicar um poema à aspirina,

que ele acreditava já ter tomado alguns milhões de comprimidos.

Ele falava que não conseguiria ter vivido se não fosse por isso.

Bom, e através de alguns biógrafos a gente sabe que ele tinha depressão,

mas ele tinha uma resistência muito grande para se medicar de forma correta

e a tomar antidepressivos porque ele achava que isso ia matar o lado poético dele

e talvez seja por esse motivo que ele sentia tanta dor de cabeça.

Daí em 1987, depois de muitas carimbadas no seu passaporte diplomático,

ele volta a morar no Rio de Janeiro.

Passados três anos por ali, ele se aposentou da sua carreira como diplomata

e mais ou menos nessa época ele passa a sofrer com uma cegueira

e se recusa a escrever porque ele dizia que era preciso enxergar

para poder compor um verso e colocar cada palavra no lugar certinho,

tudo milimetricamente estudado e calculado.

Nove de outubro de1999, aos 79 anos, João Cabral sofre um ataque cardíaco

e morre no Rio de Janeiro.

"Morte e Vida Severina" é, sem sombra de dúvidas,

a obra mais conhecida de João Cabral de Melo Neto.

Publicado em 1955 e com o subtítulo "Auto de Natal Pernambucano",

o texto foi escrito originalmente para o teatro, mas acabou não sendo encenado.

Nessa época, ele ia lançar "Duas Águas", uma reunião de sua poesia completa até então,

mas o livro estava meio magrinho, foi aí que ele decidiu acrescentar esse auto,

que já estava pronto, ele só tirou as marcações típicas do teatro,

como o nome dos personagens e a descrição dos cenários.

O poema conta a trajetória de Severino, um retirante

que faz um longo caminho da Caatinga até o Recife e, durante essa viagem,

outro severinos aparecem mortos por bala, por fome, doença e miséria.

Otto: "o nome próprio Severino já é qualificativo, 'Morte e Vida Severina',

é a vida severina, a morte severina...

A morte do Severino é uma morte severina, que atinge milhões ou milhares de Severinos.

Então esse Severino vai descendo, né, vai passando pela Caatinga, Agreste,

Zona da Mata, vem lá de cima, daquelas terras muito secas, muito áridas,

calva, pra usar o adjetivo caro ao João Cabral nesse poema,

e vai encontrando regiões menos secas, né.

Mas assim, a fome, a miséria e a morte ele encontra sempre, lá da Caatinga, lá da Serra,

passando pela Caatinga, Agreste, Zona da Mata, até a periferia do Recife,

até o cais, até a foz do Recife no Rio Capibaribe."

Maria Bethânia: "e se somos severinos, iguais em tudo na vida,

morremos de morte igual, mesma morte Severina.

Que é morte de que se morre de velhice antes dos trinta, de emboscada antes dos vinte,

de fome um pouco por dia, de fraqueza e de doença,

que é morte severina, ataca em qualquer idade e até gente."

João Cabral: "eu sou nordestino, o nordestino acho que é muito mais marcado pela paisagem

e pela paisagem humana onde ele ficou. Como é uma região sofrida,

quer dizer, é uma região... A miséria da nos olhos, eu tenho a impressão que

nenhum nordestino é indiferente ao meio em que ele vive ou que ele se criou, compreende.

Em vez de fazer uma poesia me apiedando dessa gente, eu tenho a impressão

que é mais efetivo eu mostrar a desumanidade dessa coisa fazendo ela grotesca."

Otto: "no final, tá ali o Severino já bem desanimado, ele só viu morte, né.

Ele se pergunta - não é melhor eu pular fora da ponte da vida?!

Aí de repente, né, encontra o morador ali do mangue, do Recife, o Mestre Carpina

de repente anuncia, comunica ao mestre, ele dialoga com o Mestre Carpina,

o Mestre Carpina fala, ele argumenta que apesar de todo o sofrimento, dor e miséria,

vale a pena lutar, vale a pena resistir.

Prestar atenção no gênero, né, o título "Auto de Natal Pernambucano",

o diálogo com o gênero dramático teatral do auto, que era uma peça de um ato só,

uma peça com cunho religioso, moralizante e surge na Espanha e em Portugal

lá pelo séculos 13, 14. Atentar para o próprio João Cabral, surgido na geração de 45,

ele se distingue dessa geração justamente por não fazer uma poesia metafísica, piegas.

Ele, o João Cabral, é um cara que não usa, usa raramente, parcamente,

sobretudo no começo, o verso livre mas ele não tem uma fixação pela forma fixa.

O Brasil da época né, era o Brasil de certa forma dominado pelo latifúndio.

O Brasil de hoje é o Brasil dominado pelo banco e pelo latifúndio,

o banco na frente e o latifúndio depois,

ou seja, mudou muitas coisas no Brasil, mas a concentração de terra, a estrutura social,

continua altamente excludente. Então é uma pena, eu gostaria de estar lendo esse poema aqui

e analisando como alguma coisa do passado, poder falar assim para o meus alunos:

"Olha o Brasil, ele era assim, ele já foi assim", mas, infelizmente, não. O poema continua

tocando por duas coisas: porque ele é forte, é bonito o poema, um o drama humano fortíssimo,

e o outro motivo é porque continua atual. Essas coisas, esses Severinos e Severinas,

continuam migrando, né, e agora não morrem de fome, mas morrem de bala. Na época, também

morria de bala, né, ele mesmo fala que a Vida Severina é aquela que se morre em emboscada

antes dos vinte. Então, continua acontecendo. Severinos e Severinos com outros nomes

continuam sendo mortos, morrendo de fome. Não mortos apenas no interior do Brasil, mas também,

sobretudo, nas capitais e nas periferias das capitais brasileiras.

Por ser uma obra mais recente, "Morte e Vida Severina" inspirou muitas outras produções

no cinema, no desenho e na música. E eu selecionei algumas delas para vocês.

Em 1981, a Globo produziu um especial inspirado no poema. O filme foi gravado em 20 dias,

em regiões da Bahia e de Pernambuco, e conta com a participação especial da cantora

Elba Ramalho. A produção conquistou o Emmy Internacional na categoria "Arte Popular" em 1982.
